Jayakwadi swells to 1/3rd of its capacity

"Nathsagar, the large reservoir of Jayakwadi dam, was holding around 22 TMC water as live storage (28.31 %) by 7 pm on Sunday. Both right and left bank canal systems of Jayakwadi were releasing water at the speed of around 500 cusec. Incidentally, the dam storage has gone up considerably even though water is being released from Jayakwadi to downstream areas of Marathwada for irrigation purpose. As of 8pm, the Jayakwadi recorded an inflow of 44,100 cusec and a live storage of 28.72%. It is expected to increase further given the huge inflows," dam in-charge A H Chavan said.

The water storage in Jayakwadi major irrigation project has received an addition of around 3.5 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) in the past 36 hours that ended on Sunday evening with the live-storage gradually nearing to one-third of its designed capacity. While catchment areas of the dam continue to receive weak rainfall, the heavy inflow from upstream areas has resulted in rapid growth of the water level. Incidentally, the dam storage has gone up considerably even though water is being released from Jayakwadi to downstream areas of Marathwada for irrigation purpose."Nathsagar, the large reservoir of Jayakwadi dam, was holding around 22 TMC water as live storage (28.31 %) by 7 pm on Sunday. It is expected to increase further given the huge inflows," dam in-charge A H Chavan said."The inflow could continue for the next 48 hours which would swell the dam further.

Catchment areas of the dam have also received brief spells of rainfall on Sunday that would add separate water to the dam," he added. As per updates shared by the flood-control cell of the Irrigation department, Nandur-Madhameshwar weir was witnessing discharge of 61,138 cusec towards Jayakwadi by 7 pm, while Nagamthan River gauging station was releasing water at a speed of 48,500 cusec.Darna, Gangapur and Kadwa dams were also releasing water at a speed of 16,875 cusec, 14,949 cusec and 8,856 cusec, respectively. Both right and left bank canal systems of Jayakwadi were releasing water at the speed of around 500 cusec. The discharge is on since July 18 as per directives of the canal advisory committee. It should be noted that Jayakwadi major irrigation project had witnessed similar boost by mid of current month when it received around 2.5 TMC water in less than 36 hours due to heavy rainfall activity in upstream areas.
