Aakash Android 4.0 Tablet Coming On 11 November

Recently, telecom minister, Kapil Sibal announced that the upgraded version of the Aakash tablet PC is expected to arrive on November 11. "Hopefully on November 11, you will see the President talking to 20,000 students across the nation (who) will have their hands on Aakash," said Sibal in a TOI report. The new version will be based a dual-core Cortex A9 processor clocked at 1 GHz along with 1 GB of RAM instead of a 366 MHz processor, based on an older ARM architecture in the original Aakash tablet, which featured a 17.8-cm resistive touch screen which hardly responded to touch.

The new Aakash tablet will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and we expect it to be smooth as the hardware backing seems good enough for Android 4.0. According to TOI, “Sibal said going forward, the price of the device is expected to come down to ‘$35, which will be around Rs 1,500’ with setting up of manufacturing activities in India. At the moment, we are actually formulating a Cabinet note for the manufacturing of five million Aakash tablets without any financial burden on the Ministry of Finance," said Sibal in the report.

Previously, DataWind CEO, Suneet Singh Tuli told PTI, “Supplies are on to IIT Bombay. In the next few weeks, it should be launched. I do not have the exact date, but HRD Minister [Kapil Sibal] has said he wants to launch on the anniversary date which is October 5. The tablet has not been launched until now and the launch would depend on Sibal’s schedule.”
