Government Cancer Hospital, Aurangabad

Govt. Cancer Hospital, Aurangabad (GCHA) is the first ever Govt. Institution under Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Maharashtra, started with an aim to establish a comprehensive cancer centre, providing the much-required oncology care to the population of Marathwada region & Northern part of Maharashtra state. The main objective of the centre is not only to provide comprehensive cancer care but also to develop as a Research and Training Centre of international standards. GCHA is located at the centre of Aurangabad town. At present GCHA has around 110 in-patient bed strength which is expected to be increased to 300 in near future!

Various Departments of Cancer Hospital

Radiotherapy Department:
At present the radiation oncology department has an CMS Xio treatment planning system & a high energy linear Accelerator with IGRT, IMRT facilities. It has also a HDR Brachytherapy machine. As the statistics indicate, need for a second linear accelerator is imminent. Head and neck, Breast and cervical cancers form the major group of patients receiving radiotherapy. 

Surgical oncology:
GCHA have four major operation theatres fully equipped for performing all types of cancer surgeries. The Surgical Oncology Division in GCHA is equipped with state of art equipments. It has different divisions : Orthopedic, Gynaec, ENT, Ophthalmic oncology. Laparoscopic oncology will be a vital part of surgical oncology. The endoscopy division has the facilities to perform both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. A well equipped high dependency postoperative care unit supports the surgical division.

Medical oncology:
Chemotherapy for all solid tumors will be administered in this division. Multiple myeloma, and lymphomas and leukemia will be included in the therapy lists. Pediatric oncology as a subdivision is in its infancy and a separate pediatric oncology block is being planned. In near future, medical oncology division is expected to grow to the fullest potential. More than 50% of chemotherapy will be given as day care chemotherapy.

Preventive oncology:
Though Maharashtra is the most literate state, 80% of cancer patients seek treatment in advanced stage. Reversal of this ratio is most desirable apart from the ultimate dream of prevention of cancer. GCHA will start community oncology program that includes Cancer Awareness Classes, Exhibitions, Volunteer Training Programs, Health surveys and Early Cancer Detection Camps (ECDC).

Imaging is an indispensable division in oncology. Apart from basic imaging facilities the Centre will be equipped with Mammography with stereo tactic biopsy facility, Ultra Sound Scanner and a multi-slice Computed Tomography. Magnetic Resonance Imaging is expected to be procured in near future.

The clinical laboratory established here is fully equipped with a most modern Fully Automated Biochemistry Analyser.

Various sections like Histopatholgy, Hematology and Cytopathology are fully equipped with modern 5 part Fully Automated Haematology Analyser &automated tissue processor.

Blood Storage Centre:
It is affiliated to Regional Blood Bank, Govt. Medical College & Hospital Aurangabad with blood component therapy. Blood donation camps will be a routine affair generating greater public interest in blood donation.
