Built as part of the Rs 300-crore second phase of the Ajanta Ellora Conservation and Tourism Development Project (AEDP), funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), these centres are an attempt to relive the four exquisitely painted caves at Ajanta (the 2nd century BC world heritage site) and the 750 AD Kailash temple at Ellora, believed to be world's largest single monolithic excavation," said Jagdish Patil, MTDC managing director, on Friday. The MTDC has spent Rs 61.6 crore on the centre at Ajanta while a sum of Rs 38.62 crore has been spent on the Ellora centre. These centres, apart from the replicas, would have an amphitheater, space for exhibition and events, retail shops, restaurants and other amenities, he said, adding that the centres will help promote the sites. Patil said that these centres would help provide extensive information on the monuments. "These interpretation centres will help tourists understand the monuments better,'' he added.
