551 farmers suicide cases reported in Marathwada in 2014

The backward region of Marathwada,comprised of eight districts of Maharashtra, earned a dubious distinction of having witnessed the most farmers suicide cases in the year 2014. As many as 551 cases of farmers suicides were registered since January 2014 to end the eventful year on a sorry note. Marathwada region, always striving for better agricultural facilities, had so many farmers suicides owing to various factors like hailstorm, drought,erratic weather,infertile land and subsequent mounting debts during this year.

This region has the maximum annul expected rainfall of 779 mm as per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and has been facing crisis situation since last three years in succession due to scanty rainfall and hailstorms. It was in the beginning of 2014 when the hailstorm coupled with the rains had lashed the entire the region which continued in February and March causing damages to 8 lakh hectares of ready Rabi crops and horticulture lands in the region. The devastation resulted in the growing number of farmers suicide in that period.

Later, during the monsoon season,the region witnessed a long dry spell in June and July and by the end of monsoon session only 53 percent of annual rainfall was recorded in entire region. It was after the major rainfall deficit,the administration had to engage 176 water tankers to supply drinking eater to the affected villages and hamlets in the region.
