Praveen Dixit named new Maharashtra DGP

Praveen N. Dixit, an IPS officer of the 1977 batch, took charge as the chief of Maharashtra police on Wednesday from Sanjeev Dayal and said that, like his predecessor, his top priority would be to work towards improving its dismal conviction rate. Promoting and protecting the rights of vulnerable sections such as women, children and elderly citizens would be next on his priority list, he said. Mr Dixit said all efforts were being taken to crack rationalist Narendra Dabholkar’s case. “A review will be taken of the 2011 proposal to take a decision on banning Sanatan Sanstha.”

He assured there would be no politicisation of the police department and the decision take by both the home department and the police would be unanimous. Mr Dixit has served for 36 years at the state as well as the central level and will retire around July or August next year. “Maximum efforts will be made to inculcate scientific investigative techniques and forensic tools to improve the conviction rate. We will introduce the concept of ‘Police Mitra’ by taking the help of public to improve policing.”

Mr Dixit is the 39th director general of Maharashtra police and shot to fame during his previous stint as DG Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) wherein he took several measures to increase transparency, accountability and accessibility. Unlike before, information as well as ACB officers were made accessible by him and a lot of pending issues faced by the ACB was made available on its website, thereby pushing the government to take prompt action.

During his tenure in the ACB, the number of corruption cases made almost doubled. Also, the number of bribery cases made rose by over 100 per cent. He came up with a Facebook page for ACB, which received over 21,000 likes, activated a new number — 1064 — and a mobile application,, to receive bribery complaints.

Mr Dixit served on 19 posts starting his career as an assistant SP of Solapur in 1979. He has served as SP of Aurangabad city and Raigad district, as assistant director and deputy director in IB, Spl IG in ITEC team government of Mauritius, additional DG state’s human rights, CP Nagpur, principal secretary, home department, DG Maharashtra police, housing, and DG ACB.
