Special train with over 5 lakh litre water to arrive at Latur

For the first time in the history of Latur city, which is facing severe drinking water problem due to drought, a special goods train carrying more than five lakh litre water is likely to arrive at the railway station in the backward Marathwada region from Miraj in Sangli district of western Maharahstra tonight.The 'Water Express', which started this afternoon from Miraj station with 10 wagons with each wagon carrying 55,000 litre, is likely to reach at Latur at around 2300 hours, the sources in the district administration of Latur, about 300 km awar from here, stated. 
After the train reaches Latur, water downloading will start in a private well, for which MSEDCL has made a special arrangement of power supply.District collector Pandurang Fole and Latur municipal commissioner Sudhakar Telanj along with civic officials will supervise the work of downloading of water in a private well, about 200 mter away from Latur railway station, by a pipeline.After downloading of water from wagons into the well of 80 feet deep and 60 feet wide, the tankers will be filled with water which will carry it to a water purification plant about two kilometres away from the well and the tankers will again be filled up with water after purification for public distribution purpose, sources added. Marathwada, known as the backward region in the state, is experiencing severe drought due to insufficient rainfall since last three years and at present only three per cent live water stock is available in 843 dams in the region. 

In view of all the water resources has been dried up in and around Latur, the situation is worsening day by day and the district administration has been supplying water to the city by tankers.The district administration has already imposed prohibitory orders to thwart clashes between the citizens during the water distribution.The issue of water scarcity in Latur was discussed in the state assembly and the government announced to transport water from Miraj to Latur via a special train. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu had directed the administration to make necessary arrangements for transporting water in the drought-affected areas.
