Dams overflow in Marthwada

Following heavy rain in Marathwada region, several dried irrigation projects including major, medium and minor are overflowing and flood water is being discharged from these projects. The recent rains has totally washed out last four years drought in this backwards region of Maharahstra state.

Drought prone Beed district's both major projects Majalgaon and Manjara are now overflowing within three days. Authorities has opened gates of these dams for releasing flood water simultaneuously alert has been sounded in several villages who are situated on the bank of the rivers in the district, reports from Beed said. Reports from the Osmanabad district stated that, Nimna Terna dam and Sina Kolegaon, major dams in district have received considerable water stock of 75 and 25 per cent in past three days.

Though there was no any major project in Latur district, all medium and minor project have been overflowing and discharging flood water to the Karnataka state. Parbhani district's three major projects Nimma Dudhana, Yeldari and Siddeshwar also received 90, 14 and 50 per cent live stock respectively till today. Marathwada biggest dam 'Jayakwadi' known as lifeline of the region, situated at Paithan in Aurangabad district also maintaining presently 70 per cent live water stock due to the heavy water received from upstream dams of Nashik and Ahmednagar district in end of the July.

Vishnupuri dam which was already filled up and continuously discharging flood water since last two days while another Nimma manar in Nanded district has been filled up 72 per cent. Due to the heavy rains in Beed, Osmanabad, Latur, Parbhani and Nanded standing crops including Maiz, Cotton, Uriad, Bajara have been damaged at several hectors in these districts. Administration has started making panchnamas of damaged crop in the region. The marathwada region has been recorded 99.67 per cent of annual rainfall in eight district. With this, the problem of drinking water is resolved till next monsoon, sources added.
