Type-1 diabetes awareness programme in Aurangabad on Nov 13

A city-based voluntary organisation 'Udaan' has organised a programme, comprising various activities, for children with Type-1 diabetes on November 13. Different competitions like drawing, essay writing and slogan making on the subject 'My Life's Hero', besides a dance-drama programme, under the theme 'Eye On Diabetes', will be held at Agreson Bhavan at Connaught Place in Cidco locality on November 13, a day ahead of the World Diabetes Day (WDD) which falls on November 14.

Addressing a press conference here today, Dr Archana Sarda, diabetologist and a member of Uddan, said that the November 14 is celebrated in the country as the Children's Day while across the world it is celebrated as the World Diabetes Day by International Diabetes Federation (IDF). Taking into consideration the rise in cases of Type-1 diabetes patients in India by three percent, they have organised this programme, she said.

Citing the findings of a study, she said that out of 92,000 school-going children, 1,351 children are diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes. She further said the theme for this year's WDD is 'Eye On Diabetes', which means check for diabetes and create awareness about the disease.

Nutrition, change in lifestyle, physical inactivity, genetic indisposition and obesity are the major causes of diabetes, she informed. Since, the cost of glucometer strips and insulin is unaffordable for the underprivileged children, the mortality rate in Type-1 diabetes patients is high, she added. Dr Sarda advised children with Type-1 diabetes to check their blood sugar and take insulin daily.

  1. I use the best blood sugar testing machine for my 8 year old son and LOVE it!! It has a 'flashlight' feature that I don't think any of the others blood sugar checker have atleast that I have seen. But it comes in handy for the middle of the night checks I do on him, don't have to turn the light on and wake him up. To the best of my knowledge, it also requires the least amount of blood. It is also faster than any others that we have tried. Look on :
