Farmers protest against Samrudhi Super Expressway project in Aurangabad

Thousands of farmers from Aurangabad and Jalna districts today took out a 'morhca' to the divisional commissioner's office here to protest against the state government's move to acquire fertile lands in these districts for the proposed project of 710-km-long Samrudhi Super Expressway between Nagpur and Mumbai. Led by activists of Mumbai-Nagpur Samrudhi Mahamarg Bhusanchayan Virodhi Shetkari Kruti Samiti, farmers gathered at Kranthi Chowk here and staged morcha in front to divisional commissioner's office. The office-bearers of Kruti Samiti like Kalyan Dugle, Subash Lomate, Anna Khandar, former MLA Kalyan Kaleand farmer leader Jayajirao Suryawanshi among others participated in the march.

Addressing the farmers, they alleged that the State government did not issue notices to the farmers whose lands it wanted to acquire for this project which was against the interests of farmers, they said. They also alleged that instead of developing two highways, including one national and another a state highway, between Mumabi and Nagpur, the government wanted to acquire several hectares of fertile lands without issuing any legal notices from the Road Development Corporation whose officials were now forcefully measuring the lands in these districts in violation of the law.

If the government does not stop the process of acquisition of lands for the super expressway immediately, then the farmers would intensify their agitation against the RDC and the state government, they added. Later, a delegation of Kruti Samiti handed over a memorandum of their demands to divisional commissioner Umakant Dangat. The Kruti Samiti has been agitating in the state under direction of the National Alliance of People's Movement led by social worker Medha Patkar, Mr Dugle said. Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena has opposed the state government's move of acquisition of the fertile lands of farmers near Mumbai while NCP was opposing it in Vidharbha region.UNI
