Mah Women's Commission directs authorities to stop child marriages

Maharashtra State Women's Commission president, Vijaya Rahatkar, today said that she has directed the authorities to take adequate measures to stop the child marriages which are on the rise these days across the state. She gave this direction during a review meet held at divisional commissioner's office here to take stock of situation over the issue of child marriages, after the Commission came to know that large number of the child marriages will be held at Shirur in Kasar taluka of Beed district under Aurangabad division.

Talking to reporters here after the review meet, Ms Rahatkar said that the Commission has received information that about 75 child marriages would be held in Beed district. Upon getting this information, the Commission had called a divisional-level meeting today to take stock of situation in regards to preventing such marriages, she said. She further said that the Commission has directed to all concerned government departments, including Beed collector, to verify the number of child marriages and to stop them if they really occurred by counselling both the sides. 

Ms Rahatkar said that at present action is taken only against bride's parents and added that the Commission has recommended to hold the parents of both the bride and the groom equally responsible.UNI
