Civic body to conserve historical monuments

Aurangabad: Showing concern over the condition of the heritage sites here, the civic body on Tuesday said it would conserve the historical gates , monuments and gardens. It will also include the neglected monuments in the list of heritage sites with an objective of preserving it.Municipal commissioner D M Mugalikar on Tuesday asked the civic officials to conduct a survey and identify old and historically significant sites that were neglected. In a special meeting with members of the heritage committee, Mugalikar directed the officials not to demolish the sites."Unless it is unavoidable, ensure that the monuments are conserved.

And if it is inevitable, proceed further but, take people into confidence," he said.Mugalikar also directed the officials to lodge police complaints against persons damaging the monuments. "Those who are dumping garbage around the spots, encroaching upon the land around it or damaging them should be punished," he said. The AMC recently demolished the 17th century Khas Gate in the Jinsi area to pave way for road widening. Though the municipal authorities razed the structure after getting clearance from the heritage committee of the civic body, it faced sharp criticism from various sections of the society. The authorities said that the dilapidated structure was posing a big threat to the life of commuters but historian Ramzan Shaikh said the gate should have been conserved.
