Jayakwadi bird sanctuary still waiting for tag

Aurangabad: The Jayakwadi bird sanctuary, whose draft notification for declaring eco-sensitive zone was officially drafted well before that of Gautala- Autramghat wildlife sanctuary, but it is yet to be declared as an eco-sensitive zone.An area in the range of upto 500 meter from the boundary of Jayakwadi bird sanctuary has been proposed to be declared as eco-sensitive zone. With no official measures taking place at the level of Ministry of environment and forests (MoEF), the biodiversity hotspot continues to be vulnerable to a range of threats.Speaking to TOI on Saturday, senior forest department officials said the MoEF could make the announcement any time."Necessary formalities have already been completed and nothing is left on the part of the state government now. The recent change of guard at the level of MoEF could have delayed the necessary announcement declaring Jayakwadi an eco-sensitive zone," a senior official said preferring anonymity. The proposed eco-sensitive zone around the sanctuary has Gangapur and Paithan villages of Augangabad district in the north, while Paithan town and Dynaneshwar Udyan in the east. Part of Paithan taluka along with Shevgaon, Nevasa of Ahmednagar district have been located south whereas Gangapur of Aurangabad District and Newasa of Ahmednagar district are on the west.Experts and nature lovers have expressed apprehensions over delay in necessary formalities.

"Jayakwadi bird sanctuary is one of the very few unique places across the country where rich diversity of birds can be found. The government has already wasted much time in declaring it as an eco-sensitive zone. It should show firm resolve in protecting the biodiversity," said environmentalist Kishor Pathak.Situated in Aurangabad and Ahmednagar districts of Maharashtra, the bird sanctuary is home to 67 species of fishes, 234 species of resident and migratory birds, 215 taxa, 17 species of angiosperms and 2 pteridophyte species.
