Copyright infringement case against Ram Gopal Varma adjourned till

A court here on Thursday adjourned till September 20 the hearing on the Copyright infringement case, filed by a city-based writer, against film director Ram Gopal Varmarelated to the story of Bollywood film 'Agyat' released in the year 2009.

The film starred Nitin, Gautam Rode and Priyanka Kothare. The case was filed by one Siddiqui Mushtaq Muhsin, hailing from Aurangabad and a member of the Film Writer's Association (FWA), had sent the story of 'Agyat' to Varma in the year 1998, but received no response. Later, he was surprised to watch the movie 'Agyat' released in the year 2009, 11 years after he had sent the story. He realised thatthe film is directed by Varma and is based on his story.

He then filed a case against film's director Varma and producer Ronnie Screwala. He sent the legal notices to both but they turned a blind eyetowards the Aurangabad writer. After waiting for two years, Muhsin filed a case under the violation of the copyright of his story. Based on this, the court had issued a non-bailable warrant against both the accused. Varma today appeared in the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class(JMFC) Kailash Kurandre who deferred the hearing to September 20. However, Varma submitted that due to some pressing commitments, he would not be present in the court on the next date of hearing.
