Release 8.99 TMC water from upstream dams into Jayakwadi dam: GIDC

The Godavari Irrigation Development Corporation (GIDC) has ordered to release 8.99 TMC ( 254 Mcum) water from the various upstream dams in Nashik and Ahmednagar districts into the Jayakwadi reservoir of the parched Marathwada region to solve the problem of drinking water which arose due to scanty rainfall during this monsoon season.

The decision was taken on Monday in a meeting presided by K P Bakshi president of Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority (MWRRA) as per equitable right sharing water. As per the high court order (MWRRA) has directed to GIDC to release 8.99 TMC water into Jayakwadi dam in Marathwada.

GIDC executive director Ajay Kohirkar here on Tuesday issued the order to release of water to the chief engineer of Nashik irrigation department after he was received direction from MWRRA. Of total 8.99 TMC (254 Mcum)water, 3.85 TMC (109 Mcum)from Pravara dam, 1.90 TMC (54 Mcum) from Mula dam, 2.04 TMC (57.50 Mcum) from Dharna Dam, 0.60 TMC (17 Mcum)from Gangapur dam and 0.60(17 Mcum) TMC from Phalkhed, sources said.

If the water were released from these irrigation project actually around 6 TMC will enter into Jayakwadi rest of the water will sink during flow. Meanwhile, all party MLAs' meeting was held here on Monday over the issue of releasing 12 TMC equitable rightful sharing water to thirsty Marathwada from upstream unanimously demanded to release water with in two days otherwise they will intensify their agitation for their demands.

However, the elected representatives and farmers across from the Ahmednagar and Nashik district strongly opposing to move of release water to Marathwada region.
