Gold bars weighing 3 kg seized at Aurangabad airport

In a joint operation, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence(DRI) and State Customs Department nabbed two people at Chikalthana airport for smuggling gold biscuits worth Rs one crore. This is the first time that such a seizure has been made at the airport. According to sources, the accused namely, Shaikh Javed and Shaikh Fayum boarded Air India New Delhi-Aurangabad-bound flight with gold bars weighing three kilograms on Tuesday night. 

Acting on a tip-off, a six-member team comprising DRI and customs officials caught the duo after the flight landed at Chikalthana airport. The local police said it had no previous information about the joint operation in place. However, the police confirmed that the duo have been arrested and the gold bars impounded. As per the customs rule, a male and a female cannot carry gold worth more than Rs 20,000 and Rs 40,000 in baggage, respectively. The excess gold carried is seized and auctioned.
