Social worker Dwarkadas Lohia passes away

Social worker Dwarkadas Shaligram Lohia died a natural death on Friday night at Ambajogai in Beed district of Marathwada region, sources said. He was 81. Dr Lohia served in Rastra seva dal, Sane Guruji Aroghya Mandal, Socialist party and worked for downtrodden. He participated in Marathwada development Andolan, 1972 drought agitation, anti corruption movement, fight against corrupt police officials among others movements and went to jail on several occasions including for a period of 18 months during the Emergency period in 1975.

Dr Lohia bagged several awards, including Yashwant Rao Chavan award, Environment puruskar, Manavseva puraskar, among others. He was founder member of Manavlok for socio-economic uplift of the rural-poor.
He also worked as an expert member of Marathwada Statutory Board, member of Maharashtra water conservation council and state rural health drive committee. The funeral ceremony will be held later in the day today on premises of Manavlok at Ambajogai, the sources added.
